The Dove Holes, Dovedale
Moore, Henry (1776-1848)
1810
Moore was a Derby born painter, engraver and etcher. In 1802 he painted ‘Derby from Little Chester’ which was reproduced by contemporary illustrators and ceramic painters. From 1793 he worked in Richard Brown’s marble works where he devised a method of etching onto Ashford Black Marble. By 1818 he had left Brown and set up as a drawing master where his pupils included boys from the Derby School. He illustrated a series of guidebooks including ‘Picturesque Excursions from Derby, to Matlock Bath and its vicinity’ (1818).
The Dove Holes caves are two large but shallow caves near Milldale in Dovedale. Moore’s composition is very similar to an engraving ‘A Prospect in the Upper Part of Dove-Dale, five Miles North of Ashbourn’, which was first published in 1743, after a now untraced painting by Thomas Smith of Derby. These engravings were a commercial success and smaller versions were soon published in travel magazines.
