3 Miss Johnsons of Loughborough. J.N. and Jasper Atkinson at Dinner in Dove Dale, Derbyshire
Nixon, John (1750-1818)
No date set
John Nixon is known for his caricatures of Georgian life. He visited Bath with his friend Thomas Rowlandson in 1792. It is not known when he visited Derbyshire but two sketches exist; this one and one showing Martha Norton the ‘well woman’ of Buxton (Buxton Museum, DERSR : 41557).
Reynard’s Cave in Dovedale is situated behind a large, natural limestone arch. The archway is very distinctive and visitors can climb up the steep pathway from the bottom of the valley, to its entrance. The cave and arch feature in an engraving published by Robert Sayer around 1770.
