Castleton
Robertson, David (Captain)
c.1794
We do not know who Captain David Robertson was. There are three known watercolours of his at Buxton Museum, all showing different views of Castleton.
This is an unusual view of Castleton. Most artists focused on painting the entrance to Peak Cavern. Robertson produced two paintings of Peak Cavern but also this view of the village. When John Skinner visited the village in 1803 he wrote in his diary that ‘Castleton is but a poor place in itself deriving its chief support from its nearness to the mines and the casual visits of strangers, it owes its name to an almost impregnatable fortress situated on a lofty hill above the village’ (John Skinner, ‘Sketches in Derbyshire, Wales, etc’, British Library, MS 33640).
