Scene in Dovedale

Ramsay, John (1768-1845)

No date set

We do not know when General John Ramsay visited Derbyshire, although the detail in his sketch of St Giles Church in Matlock, suggests it was sometime after 1803. Ramsay was a soldier and the son of the artist Allan Ramsay. As a boy he accompanied his father on a Grand Tour in 1782 and later went on to become a collector of antiquities and art. He was painted in miniature by Francois Ferriere in 1794 (National Galleries Scotland, PG 1748).
