Cotton Mill, Matlock

Boreman, Zachariah (1738-1810)

No date set

Boreman was a porcelain painter. He is mentioned in 1770 in the accounts of the Chelsea Porcelain Factory, where he was paid as a decorator. He moved to Derby in 1783 where he worked, more or less continually until 1794. He was known for his landscapes and it is has been suggested by John Fineran that he was tutored by both Paul Sandby and Joseph Wright.

Not many eighteenth-century pictures of Derbyshire’s cotton mills exist. Out of those that do, the most well-known were painted by Joseph Wright of Derby. One of these is owned, alongside its companion picture of Willersley Castle, by Derby Museums. This watercolour shows Arkwright’s first water powered cotton mill, which he built in 1771. It was made by Boreman as a design for porcelain and the image was used on Derby Porcelain tablewares in the 1790s.
